This is my local library. The staff are pleasant and helpful and there is a wide selection of books and magazines. There is a large children's area. This is an open-plan library which caters for the whole community, children included. There is a small study space within the open-plan area. It is not the place to come for silent study !
I just came alone with my girl who does her GCSE's in May and to carry on with my university assignments. As soon as I entered, I heard very loud nursery rhymes being sung. I was suprised and yet again, I realised that this is part of their scheduled programmes. My daughter used her earphones to do carry on with her studies but I am not used to listening to music and doing my studies. After the toddler group singing session finished, parents left not taking to consideration or respecting the fact that this is a library.I do understand it is not easy to keep your toddler silent. However, one parent stayed back and started to read books for their children using the loudest voice she could use.I am very disappointed as the library staff would not care or advise her to keep her voice down.I have been to Watford libraries which maintain the silence very well. People are aware of the rules and know that they need to maintain the silence and respect others. I did not feel like I was in a library. It was as loud as a typical market.
